Why some touch controls feel great and others don't

Why some touch controls feel great and others don't

There's no physical stick on a phone, so every game has to fake one, and the ways they do it vary wildly. After enough reviews I've started noticing the patterns that work.

The best controls keep your thumbs where they naturally rest and don't ask them to stretch. Floating virtual sticks — where the stick appears wherever you press — beat fixed ones almost every time. Games that let you reposition buttons, like a few racers do, win extra points.

Tilt steering is a trap on mobile. It looks intuitive and feels terrible on a bus. Neon Drift Circuit offers it, but touch steering was far steadier for me, and the sensitivity slider was the thing that actually made it click.

My rule of thumb: if I'm fighting the controls instead of the game after fifteen minutes, that's on the developer, not me. The good ones disappear and you forget you're tapping glass.
